     Safe Driving in October

by Nichole Rilk, Traffic Safety Program Manager

October is a very important month for traffic safety, there
are several campaigns going on to help us focus on safe
      driving:

      Pedestrian Safety Month
Pedestrians are considered vulnerable road users
because, unlike vehicles operators, they do not have the
protection of a vehicle structure around them.
Pedestrians are also more difficult to see than vehicles.
Every time you drive, you must keep your mind and

eyes active to search for pedestrians.
      National School Bus Safety Week

Observed October 19-23; This year we are focusing on the
theme, “Red Lights Mean STOP!” If a school bus is displaying
alternating flashing red light signals, visible from the front or
rear you need to stop immediately before reaching the bus.
Do not proceed until the flashing red lights stop.
      National Teen Driving Safety Week

Observed October 18-24; This week is important because teens have a full life ahead of them and we need to
encourage, teach and instill safe driving habits for these beginners. As parents and educators, it’s our responsibility to
address the dangers for teen drivers which include alcohol, inconsistent seat belt use, distracted driving, drowsy

driving, speeding and number of passengers. Parents can be the biggest influences on teens choices behind the wheel, so
set a good example for them on the road.
