Residents. There is a standing army of about 50,-
000 soldiers, probably one-fifth of whom are Euro-
peans. The colonial navy consists of fifty men-
of-war and smaller ships.
Portugese Timor is one of the largest of the
Timor smaller islands, having 12,593 square
miles, and a population of 600,000.
By the treaty of 1859 the island was divided be-
tween Portugal and Holland. The Portugese part
was formerly governed from the Portugese colony
of Macao in China, but since 1896 it has been an
independent colony.
