HELEN KELLER
Helen Keller was born in Tuscumbia, Alabama, USA, on June 27th 1880.
Helen became ill which was described by doctors as "an acute congestion of the stomach and the brain", (thought to be Scarlet Fever or Meningi- tis) at 19 months of age that left her blind and deaf.

As an adult she be- came a tireless advocate for people with disabilities. And in 1925, she attended the Lions Clubs Interna- tional Convention and challenged Lions to be- come "Knights Of The Blind

in the crusade against darkness."
The Lions accepted her challenge and our work ever since have in- cluded sight pro-
grams aimed at prevent- able blindness.
