Two Defendants Face Court Proceedings
Following Record Cocaine Seizure off Cork Coast
IN a pivotal legal development, two
individuals have made their appear-
ance in court, facing charges linked
to the astonishing confiscation of
nearly €160 million worth of cocaine
from a bulk cargo ship anchored off
the coast of Cork. This dramatic event
has unfolded as Irish authorities have
executed one of the largest drug
seizures in the nation’s annals.
The accused, identified as 31-year-
old Jamie Harbron, a resident of South
Avenue, Billingham, Stockton-on-
Tees, UK, and a 60-year-old Ukrainian
national, Vitaliy Lapa, whose residence
is listed as “no fixed abode,” have
both been charged with conspiracy to
import drugs.
This legal proceeding involved the pres-
ence of armed Garda units, who played
a pivotal role in transporting the defen-
dants to the Waterford District Court.
Following their arrests, each defendant
faced the formal charge of conspiracy
to import drugs, with Mr. Lapa opting
for silence upon receiving the caution.
Notably, no applications for bail were
made during the proceedings. Mr.
Lapa’s legal representative, Maria
Murphy, filed requests for a psycho-
logical assessment, legal aid, and the
assurance that her client would receive
all necessary medical treatment while
in custody. These appeals were met
without objection.
Meanwhile, Detective Garda Ciara

McNulty, representing the National
Drugs and Organized Crime Bureau,
recounted the arrest of Mr. Harbron,
which took place at 11:10 pm on a
Thursday evening. Subsequent to
the caution, he similarly declined to
respond to the drug-related charge. No
application for bail was submitted, and
Mr. Harbron did not require medical
attention. Legal aid, requested by
his solicitor Lana Doherty, was also
granted.
Both individuals have been remanded
in custody and are slated to appear
before the Wexford District Court via
videolink on the forthcoming Monday.
This unfolding legal narrative origi-
nates from the astounding discovery
of 2,253 kilograms of cocaine aboard
the cargo ship MV Matthew. The
vessel was apprehended off the coast
of County Cork, with members of the
Army Ranger Wing executing a daring
abseiling operation from a helicopter
to secure the vessel earlier in the week.
The MV Matthew had been under the
surveillance of law enforcement agen-
cies since Friday, in response to intel-
ligence reports hinting at a substantial
international drug smuggling attempt.
The seizure is being hailed as the most

significant in the history of the Irish
State.
Authorities believe that the cocaine
captured on board the MV Matthew,
following a spectacular military opera-
tion at sea, was destined for distribution
beyond the Irish shores, with poten-
tial reach extending into the United
Kingdom and continental Europe.
As part of the comprehensive operation,
a fishing trawler that was suspected
of receiving drug deliveries grounded
off the coast of County Wexford late
on Sunday. However, inclement condi-
tions have hindered authorities from
boarding the vessel for a search.
This unfolding case has also seen the
apprehension of five other individ-
uals as part of ongoing investigations
into the international drug smuggling
network.
