Alistair Overeem Ends His Long Combat
Sports Career and Ventures into Politics
“ALISTAIR Overeem Ends His Prolonged Career
in Combat Sports and Shifts Towards Politics,”
he confirmed in an interview with Panorama. The
43-year-old Dutch fighter will be a list pusher for
BVNL, the party led by Wybren van Haga.
Overeem is an icon in the world of combat sports.
He began his career as a kickboxer and achieved
his greatest success in 2010 by winning the World
Grand Prix in the renowned K-1. Throughout his
career, he defeated prominent fighters such as Badr
Hari, Peter Aerts, Gökhan Saki, and Tyrone Spong.
Later, Overeem transitioned to the UFC, the most
prominent organization in mixed martial arts
(MMA). Although he never won the title there, he
did manage to become a champion in organiza-
tions like Strikeforce and Dream.
Over two years ago, Overeem returned to kick-
boxing by signing with GLORY. Initially scheduled
to face Rico Verhoeven, he had to withdraw from
the fight against the world champion due to a back
injury.
At the end of last year, he faced Badr Hari at the
GelreDome, where Overeem won but was later
disqualified due to doping use. Since then, the
experienced Dutchman has not fought.
Overeem is now shifting his focus to politics and
holds the 41st position as a list pusher for BVNL.
He has indicated that if he receives sufficient votes,
he will become a part of the Parliament.
