                              Suctioning




                               Coughing is superior to suctioning in removing excessive
                                 secretions.

                                  • Encourage the patient to cough to clear secretions
                                  • Only suction, when needed, pass catheter max 2-3
                                    times

                                  • Avoid unnecessary suctioning as the tracheal mucosa
                                    may become irritated and infection may be introduced

                              Suctioning




                              Indications that the patient requires suctioning include:
                               Noisy, moist respirations
                               Increased pulse
                               Increased respirations
                               Non-productive coughing
                               More frequent or congested sounding cough

                               Visible secretions
                               Increased shortness of breath
