Assess surrounding skin and contours
Discuss type of accessories and appliances that may benefit the
type of stoma

Loop Ileostomy or Colostomy

 When the rod is not sutured to the skin,
cut a skin barrier and slip under the rod.
Cut appliance opening wide to
accommodate the rod – the skin barrier
will protect the skin
 When the rod is sutured to the skin cut a
skin barrier product around sutured
rod/or over the rod so that pouching
surface and peristomal skin is flat and
smooth
 Consider placing a label on pouch to note
presence of rod so care can be taken
when changing the appliance
