Safe Patient Handling for
Clinicians
Importance of Safe Patient Handling
NYS Safe Patient Handling (SPH) Law was enacted as part
of the State 2014-2015 budget.
The law required the Commissioner of Health to establish a
workgroup of stakeholders to create a best practice guide to
all included healthcare facilities.
The SPH law aimed to:
• Reduce risk of injury to patients
• Reduce risk of injury to caregivers
• Increase return on investment to healthcare facilities
