Vocabulary: Types of Wounds and Wound Dressings






                  Match the following words with the correct definition or meaning. Discuss with the class.


                   Acute wound
                                            by an injury or surgery
                   Chronic wound
                                            because of health issues
                   Traumatic wound          A wound caused by a sudden injury, like a cut, tear, or crush
                   Surgical wound           A wound made intentionally during surgery

                   Ulcer                    An open wound usually caused by poor circulation, pressure, or health
                                            conditions like diabetes
                   Exudate                  Fluid that leaks out of a wound as it heals
                   Purulent exudate         a specific type of exudate that indicates infection. It is thick, cloudy, and
                                            often yellow, green, or brown, and may have a foul odor
                   Suture                   A stitch or series of stitches made to hold the edges of a wound or surgical
                                            incision together to help it heal
                   Slough                   a layer of dead tissue that appears as soft, moist, and often yellow, white,
                                            or gray material on the wound surface
                   Debris                   dead tissue, bacteria, dirt, or any other unwanted material in or around a
                                            wound
                   Clean wound              A wound that is free from infection, dirt, or foreign material

                   Primary dressing         The first layer of dressing that goes directly on the wound to protect it and
                                            keep it moist
                   Secondary dressing       A dressing that covers the primary dressing for extra protection and to
                                            keep it in place
                   Semi occlusive dressing  A dressing that allows some air in while keeping the wound moist to help it
                                            heal
                   Dry necrotic             Dead tissue in a wound that is dry, hard, and usually black or brown. It
                                            needs to be removed to help the wound heal
                   Superficial granulation  New, healthy
                                            showing that healing has started
