The Importance of Effective Communication in Nursing

To be a successful clinical nurse or nurse leader, you need exceptional communication
skills—and you need to be able to use them during high-stress situations. Nurses who listen and
understand the concerns of each patient are better (1) ……………….. (prepare) to address
problems. Good communication skills can improve the quality of decisions made, cause patients
to feel (2) ……………….. (motivate) to follow treatment protocols, and achieve desired clinical
outcomes. On the other hand, poor communication can be (3) ……………….. (frustrate) for
               nurses during teamwork.
Verbal communication helps build a rapport between the nurse and the patient. It is essential
to make patients comfortable in revealing whatever is bothering them even though they may
sometimes feel (4) ……………….. (embarrass). At times nurses must communicate with a (5)
……………….. (soothe) voice, while other situations ask for a more authoritative tone.
Another way to create a harmonious relationship between the nurse and the patient is the use
of nonverbal communication elements. You should not use (6) ……………….. (threaten) body
language. You should show that you are (7) ……………….. (interest) in what the patient is
saying by maintaining eye contact and nodding your head. You can also sit down when you can,
and lean forward to show that you are (8) ……………….. (engage).
Written communication skills are also essential for effective nurse-to-nurse communication.
As a nurse, you are (9) ……………….. (compel) to create and update patient records. Nurses
must be accurate in taking written notes -- even one wrong digit in a medication dosage could be
               (10) ……………….. (devastate). Nurses who start the next shift in a hospital will rely on the
previous nurse's notes for guidance in treating patients.
