4 GRAMMAR FOCUS: Conjunctions

A. Read the text and underline the conjunctions: and, or, but, because.
KYOTO, JAPAN

I love Japan.There is a very old and charming
city called Kyoto. In Japanese, Kyoto means
capital city. In Kyoto, there are historical
treasures from World War II. Shinto and
Buddhist shrines are also in the city. They have
thousands of priceless artifacts.
Kyoto is beautiful because the city is full of
charming neighborhoods and exceptional
gardens. The homes that line Kyoto’s winding
streets are made of paper and wood. Most houses are small: just one room covered with tatami
mats. A tatami is a straw woven floor mat that is always the same size. Beds are simple futons
places on the floor but they are sparsely furnished. Kyoto’s homes are very comfortable. They often
open up to a private garden where you can visit and relax.
The architecture and design of Kyoto’s older buildings is amazing. There is Old Imperial Palace. It
is a graceful and elegant royal home. There is also a building called the Golden Pavilion. This
impressive structure sits in the middle of gorgeous lake surrounded by well-maintained gardens.
Believe it or not, the pavilion is actually adorned with real gold.

Conjunctions
Conjunctions, like and, or, but, and because connect two parts.
 “and” is used to connect two equal sentences.

 “or” is used to connect two alternatives.
 “but” is used to connect two contrast sentences.
 “because” is used to connect cause and effect sentences.

Examples:
 My family and I always go to Jatim Park every holiday.
 To go around Jogja, you may try to use Becak or Andong.
 Medan is the fourth largest city in Indonesia but it is not a metropolitan city.
 I like Bali because it has beautiful beaches and delicious foods.
