agitated, don't turn your back on him. Remain calm, talk softly, and ask what they need. Always be alert of
exits and objects in the environment with any patient with a psychiatric illness. If you feel threatened,
remove yourself from the situation if possible and call security per hospital policy.
Next, consult psychiatry as soon as possible. A psychiatrist can evaluate your patients and review their
medication regimen. The psychiatrist also can ensure that they receive appropriate psychiatric services after
               their discharge from the hospital.
As the condition of patients improves and discharge is planned, talk with the hospital social worker to
determine if they have any needs for assistance upon discharge. If their symptoms are stable and they do
not need oxygen or physical therapy, they should be able to return home. The healthcare provider should
complete comprehensive medication reconciliation when the patients are discharged. Finally, refer the
patients to a structured day program for ongoing support upon discharge, and give them information on
when to follow up with their primary care provider and psychiatrist.
