 Highlight
 Sunset Magazine is a lifestyle
 magazine focused on life in the   NEW  NEW                        NEW
 Western United States.


 Formed in 1898 as a promotional   8QOIRR-;AHJKV              8QOIRR-;AHJJM                                           8QOIRR-;AHJGC
 magazine for the Southern
 Pacific Railroad, the magazine
 was intended to combat the
 negative “Wild West” stereo-
 types about California. The
 magazine faced early problems
 after the 1906 San Francisco
 earthquake destroyed the
 Sunset offices but recovered
 fairly quickly thereafter.
 By 1912 the magazine was
 doing well enough to purchase
 Portland-based magazine
 Pacific Monthly and combined
 the two to form Sunset: The
 Pacific Monthly.

 Barns, amongst others.                                             was an American artist whose work focused on
                                                                    the American West.


                                                                    In 1900 he began traveling through Arizona and
                                                                    Mexico and accompanied artist Edward Borein
                                                                    on a horseback trip through several Western

                                                                    states. His sketches of his trip started drawing

                                                                    To assure a steady income while submitting his
                                                                    artwork to exhibitions and galleries, he worked as

                                                                    started illustrating for Sunset magazine, including
                                                                    some of the images we have chosen for
                                                                    our collection.
