Outhouse Racing: Good Clean Fun
If there’s one event that perfectly sums up the
spirit of Fur Rondy Festival, it’s the outhouse races.
Equal parts ridiculous and impressive, this is what
happens when cabin humor, winter survival, and
competitive pride collide. Teams build their own
outhouses, strap on skis, throw on costumes, and
sprint down Fourth Avenue like it’s perfectly normal
to race a portable bathroom through downtown
Anchorage.
The rules are simple: one person must ride inside,
and four runners push, pull, and shout their way
to the finish line. It’s not just about the speed, but
also about whether the outhouse stays together. To
add a little drama to the event, if the runners or the
outhouse touch the pilons dotting the race track, the
team must donate $10 to a local charity. The results
are anything but simple. There are wipeouts, heroic
recoveries, wildly creative designs, and enough
laughter to keep everyone warm despite the cold.
It’s silly, loud, and unapologetically Alaskan.
