            Movie Roundtable Discussion

                        MOONLIGHT

DEI Committee Roundtable Movie Discussion Recap

The DEI committee at NCPS recently started roundtable discussions about
movies relating to themes of diversity, equity and inclusion. All NCPS members
are invited to these roundtable discussions. The first one was held (virtually)
on December 9, 2021, about the movie 'Moonlight'.

'Moonlight' is a 2016 American film written and directed by Barry Jenkins,
based on Tarell Alvin McCraney's unpublished semi-autobiographical play ‘In
Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue’. 'Moonlight has been cited as one of the best
films of the 21st century’. The film won the Academy Award for Best Picture, in
addition to other awards (Source: Wikipedia)

The movie is a moving portrayal of the life of a boy who grows up with
traumatic childhood experiences, while he attempts to understand his
sexuality and identity. In this roundtable discussion, as psychiatrists shared
their observations and perspectives about this movie, there was an engaging discussion about some of
the themes that the movie delved into, particularly the intersection of experiences surrounding race,
      trauma, and substance use.

This virtual roundtable discussion turned out to be not only an avenue to share, engage and learn from
one another's experiences and perspectives relating to this vital topic, but also, was a wonderful
opportunity to get to know and connect with other psychiatrists practicing in Northern California. The DEI
committee welcomes all NCPS members to attend future roundtable movie discussions.
