An Ontario brewery turns relatable expressions into bold branding
“Nothing New” “Oh Me Oh My!” “Gee Whiz” piquette, 5% pale ale, 3.5% kölsch, 4.5%
Cross hoppy craft beer with the legacy of Ed Ruscha — the pop artist known for high-contrast canvases painted with phrases like “Oof” and “Start Over Please” — and you get Caledon, Ontario, brewery Sonnen Hill. Each of the brewery’s labels features a composition of just a few simple words that nevertheless manage to capture an entire state of mind. It helps that each expression is presented in a Ruscha-esque style (here the work of graphic designer Adam Globa) that adds extra punch to the simple but impactful micro-poems. And with offerings that range from piquettes made with Pinot noir skins and Montmorency cherries to a kölsch with a nice bread flavour, the beers inside are their own work of art.

 The Endorsement
   An elegant alternative to SodaStream
By day, sparkling water helps us to hit our ongoing hydration goals. By night, it acts as a satisfying substitute for a cocktail when we’re looking to take a break from hard liquor. The only caveat: seltzer-makers tend to take up precious counter space with- out necessarily complementing our array of carefully chosen, tastefully minimalist appliances. At least, that’s what we thought. Thankfully, the good people of Sweden have a solution in the form of the Aarke Carbonator III, an appliance designed to deliver not only carbon-dioxide, but also serious design cred. The best part: it operates using standard SodaStream canisters. $300
