A male usually ejaculates about 2 – 5 mL of semen, each
milliliter containing about 50 – 130 million sperm.
Once in the female reproductive tract:
Prostaglandins in semen thin the mucus at the
opening of the uterus and stimulate uterine
contractions
When ejaculated semen coagulates:
This makes it easier for uterine contractions to
move it along.
Anticoagulants liquefy the semen and the sperm
begin swimming.
The alkalinity of semen helps neutralize the acidic
environment of the vagina.
