Figure-eight loop on a bight

Much loved by climbers, this loop is quick and easy

to tie but has a tendency to jam. Which is perhaps
why it’s never used by sailors, who usually opt for a

bowline instead. Try both and see which works best

for you.

1 Put a bight in the line and form a loop by passing the bight over the

standing part.
