EIGHTH GRADE COURSE DESCRIPTIONS
“Reading is essential for those who seek to rise above the ordinary.” ~ Jim Rohn
LANGUAGE ARTS
1108 Language Arts
Eighth grade Language Arts will build on the foundations of the seventh grade English and Reading course curriculums. Students will review and expand upon the concepts of grammar, language, and vocabulary. Writing instruction will focus on narrative, informational, and argumentative domains, with an emphasis on improving the writer's craft and structure. There will also be a strong emphasis on analyzing texts and writing text-dependent analysis. Grammar will be strongly writing-based and will be integrated using practical application. Students will engage in independent and structured literature study of both informational and literary texts, including novels, short stories, plays, poems, articles, and essays. Particular attention will be paid to the critical, close reading of texts and strong text-dependent analysis, with a focus on the author's purpose and craft. Students enrolled in this class will take the English Language Arts Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA).

Students sharpen their vocabulary, grammar, and listening skills through lessons designed to provide explicit modeling and ample opportunities to practice. Students also routinely write responses to texts they have read, and use more extensive, process-based lessons to produce full-length essays in narrative, informative, analytical, and argumentative formats. Students enrolled in this class will take the English Language Arts Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA).
