MATH 8 (PBSD Math Pathway) 1308 Math 8
1329 Math 8 Compacted
Math 8 or Math 8 Current will provide students with a foundation of mathematical reasoning mainly focused on algebraic concepts. Students will explore number theories and their real world applications as well as demonstrate a mastery of single variable equations and functions. A focus will be directed towards the five eligible contents specific to the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment. Upon completion, students will have attained the knowledge necessary to begin Algebra 1 the following year. Students enrolled in this class will take the Mathematics Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA).
* Math 8 Compacted is the same curriculum as Math 8, but the course may move faster or go deeper into specific content based on the readiness of learners in the classroom.
2308 PDLA Math 8
The course begins with a unit on input-output relationships that builds a foundation for learning about functions. Students make connections between verbal, numeric, algebraic, and graphical representations of relations and apply this knowledge to create linear functions that can be used to model and solve mathematical and real-world problems. Students focus on formulating expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and writing and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations. Students develop a deeper understanding of how translations, rotations, reflections, and dilations of distances and angles affect congruence and similarity. Students develop rules of exponents and use them to simplify exponential expressions. Students extend rules of exponents as they perform operations with numbers in scientific notation. Estimating and comparing square roots of non-perfect squares to perfect squares exposes students to irrational numbers and lays the foundation for applications such as the Pythagorean theorem, distance, and volume. Students enrolled in this class will take the Mathematics Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA)
ALGEBRA 1
1318 Algebra 1
This Algebra 1 course will develop algebraic concepts and skills which will enable students to represent situations involving variable quantities with expressions, equations, inequalities, and word problems. These skills will be developed through symbolism and mathematical abstraction. The students will demonstrate their ability to transform algebraic ideas to solve equations, inequalities, and linear systems. The ideas of relations, linear functions and slope, along with polynomial expressions will be discussed. This course is aligned to the Pennsylvania Keystone Algebra 1 eligible content. Students enrolled in this class will take the Mathematics Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) and the Algebra 1 Keystone Assessment. Successful completion of this course will be denoted on your high school transcript.
