DISCOVERY PERIOD
Daily for all students, the last 30 minutes of the school day is set aside for Discovery Period. This time offers students the opportunity to participate in activities that interest them. The activities include athletics, arts, technology, music, student government, STEM, and homework help to name a few. Offerings occur on set days of the five day cycle. On days that students do not have an activity, they stay with a teacher from their team to participate with Racehl’s Challenge lesson, do homework, receive help or enrichment, read silently, select books from the library, or participate in teacher approved activities. Students sign up for the Discovery period occurring within the Fall, Winter, and Early Spring. Students can select from multiple activities depending on interest and availability. Due to servicing all students, students will participate in one activity per Discovery cycle. Prior to student sign-ups, students and families will be informed to view a slide show presentation of available clubs. It is a student’s decision as to which available club they elect to sign up for.

RACHEL’S CHALLENGE / CHAMPS
Rachel’s Challenge exists to equip and inspire individuals to replace acts of violence, bullying, and negativity with acts of respect, kindness, and compassion. Rachel’s Challenge is based on the life and writings of Rachel Joy Scott, through her example, Rachel’s Challenge is making a positive impact in the lives of millions of people every year. Superintendents, principals, teachers, parents, and students bring Rachel’s Challenge into their schools because of escalating problems such as: bullying, student isolation, teen suicide, discrimination, school violence, and increased disciplinary actions. Through powerful presentations, training, community events, and professional development, Rachel’s Challenge provides the sustainable solution. The “CHAMPS” program is an in-house tool enabling the students and staff of Holiday Park Elementary to recognize and foster positive behavior. The students of Holiday Park are familiar with the program and its aim of eliminating bullying. All students are taught to identify bullying and are given strategies to deal with it. The school’s anti-bullying policy is posted throughout the building. The goal is to empower students to promote and support a safe, caring, and positive learning environment. Please visit Holiday Park Webpage for additional information as well as information on resources used to support Racehls’ Challenge.
