What Corruption ? Whose Corruption ?
Managing change
A small study afterwards based on the stories provided by some of the survivors
concluded that people who 'forgot' their societal values of 'deference' to others, the sort of
deference that might have led to their helping vulnerable people - such as 'putting women
and children first' - and instead put their own survival first were the most likely to have
survived.
In 2014, another ferry, the MV Sewol, 415 capsized and sank in waters off South Korea.
Out of 476 people on board, some 304 died. Many of those that died were schoolchildren.
Afterwards, much emphasis was placed on the high casualty rate and the instinct of
children to 'do as they were told'.

There's a highly popular tourist city in Southern Asia. Until recently, it had only one
westernised shopping mall. Inside this mall are several free standing ATM.
Anyone who has seen a free standing ATM being installed or removed will know that
it can take some 6 or more strong men to do the initial moving together in conjunction with
a lorry equipped with a hydraulic hoist that can lift the ATM onto or off the truck.

For years, m'zuŋ u in that part of the world would tell you that using an ATM inside a
shopping mall was the safest way to use an ATM. No need to worry about 'card skimming'
and other such. The ATM inside a shopping mall can be expected to have 24/7 security.
Especially overnight when doors will be locked and the shopping mall will be patrolled by
several security guards.
And yet, one morning when they unlocked that particular shopping mall they
discovered that one of the ATMs had disappeared and two of the security guards had also
vanished!
All sorts of speculation followed. Much centred around the missing security guards.
How could it be possible for them not to have been involved? But also, how could easily
identifiable security guards expect to be able to get away with such a crime?
The reality is that they didn't.
In many cases, very poor people in an underdeveloped country, some just barely
surviving and others actually in overwhelming debt, will agree to participate. In more cases

than m'zuŋ u are aware of, the parents will instruct their son to participate - possibly in
return for the family receiving a payment. And in different regions of the world, filial duty
towards parents requires that a son must do as the parents wish.
