m̩ 'zuŋ u memories of NGO in Africa
                                                                          ɡ

walk softly, go quietly and you will see...

These are not enough to raid every home in a city of almost one million. They are free to

roam, many of the regular DRC army units having fled once M23 cut of food and other
            supplies into the city.

The danger comes as much from the neighbours. They, living their own desperate

lifelong struggle, will find it all too easy to raid from an unoccupied home. And, they will
reason, if not them, then someone else will come and do it.

And in my walks around Gisenyi during these days, I pass the various hotels. In one of the

more expensive, the car park was filled with ‘4×4’ vehicles, all boldly labelled with a well know
aid organisation’s logo. Both for 'WV’ personnel, the privations suffered by Africans. No, much

more of a '4 star' experience.

Those 'zuŋ u who don't really have much personal experience of Africa can be lulled
into believing the image of 'worthiness' of the Aid NGO.

Look closely and time after time you will see just how much an NGO separates its people
from the Africans. It's an NGO form of 'apartheid'. Look even closer and you might be horrified

                                                                       m̩

at how much of your money is spent on 'cosseting' the 'zuŋ u NGO worker.
And if you look around Africa, you will see this in surprising places.

The luxury life of some UK Aid funded volunteers
For various reasons, I came into contact with a 'capacity building' NGO funded by a part of the

UK Government in one of Africa's poorest countries.

The volunteers were there to raise the standards of local African consultants in the hope
that these Africans would then be able to stimulate the local business sector and so boost the

                                                             ɡ

national economy. By any standard, the 'zuŋ u volunteer consultants were not among UK's
            finest.
The NGO ‘apartheid’ and associated costs were an eye opener to me.

In order to get them 'in country', the NGO paid a sum to cover various vaccinations and

paid for a return air fare. And of course, the travel insurance. Perhaps a total of USD1,500.
There were approximately 5 or so domestics to look after in daily life. Two to do the

household chores. A driver and security guards. I have no idea just how much this would cost,
