1. It doesn’t work to try and return the same dirty tricks to the aggres-

pound the other one. The guy not being hit tends to become passive
               – he thinks it’s better not to get hurt.
            3. Facing an aggressor at the earliest opportunity is the best way to
minimize the grief he can cause you.

fessional sport. There were professional wrestling matches every Friday
night at McCullough’s Arena. My Dad was given two complementary
ringside seats for each Friday night. He usually went and took an adult
friend as a guest. Sometimes Dad would take us kids. As a result, Sam,
Gord and I wrestled each other virtually every Saturday morning. I never
enjoyed boxing, but I enjoyed wrestling. Applying a wrestler’s headlock
or toehold was part of the game and never hurt very much. These family
wrestling matches gave me a reasonable ability to take care of myself.
As a youngster, I was assigned to the back bedroom in the house.
I had to go to bed earlier than Sam which meant that I was in the back
bedroom all alone. I looked out and saw the lamppost on the corner of
Fourth North and Fifth West – which I took as a sentry light. Thereafter
I was no longer afraid of the dark – I had a sentry who was looking after
            me all night long.
At Washington School, I yearned for some leadership role but
            did not attain such.
