The environmental issues at Tasik Chini and its surrounding area continue to raise concerns at both domestic and international levels. Tasik
Chini’s special status as a UNESCO BSR under the MAB Program calls for a balance between the pursuit of economic development and
environmental conservation.
It is important to continue to protect Tasik Chini. Therefore, an action-oriented and comprehensive lake restoration committee must be
established. It is crucial to organize a coordinated action to rehabilitate the lake in view of the limited success in removing the cat’s tail and
in rejuvenating the lotus plants. The committee must actively involve the local community to connect them to their own natural resources.
A basin protection strategy in the form of development of the monitoring system, assessment of pollution, pollution control and basin
conservation should be proposed in order to minimize the impact. If proper alternative arrangements like sustainable management of water
resources, protection of mining and awareness of local people are not made then the situation may be deteriorated and alarming to the
environment of the Tasik Chini.
.
A concerted effort, therefore, is urgently needed at the state and federal levels to stop the harmful activities and find long-term solutions to
ensure its survival. Our national treasure and heritage is an inheritance better than money; it cannot be stolen as long as we strive to
preserve it. However, it can be lost or forgotten by the choices that we make. Act we must, and now.
