Learning Materials: Songs
Social function of song
People sing songs for the the following purpose:
To entertain
To express feeling
To deliver message/moral lesson/social criticism
Parts of song
A complete song consists of parts which together make a good song. The following is the
brief explanation about the common parts of songs:
Intro: The instrumental music at the beginning of a song
Verses: The parts of the lyrics which contains the story of the song
Chorus/Refrain: The climax of the song which is usually repeated
Bridge: The section which provides relief from repetition of the verses
Outro/coda: The last section of a song, usually without lyrics, just instument.
Language features of songs
The language features of songs include the followings:
Imagery
Imagery is the language used to create images in the listeners mind.
Figurative language
Figurative language refers to the use of words in a way that deviates from the
conventional meaning. There are some types of figurative language. Here are the
common ones:
- Simile: Comparing two things using “like” or “as”, e.g. “He is as brave as lion”.
- Metaphor: Comparing two things that are not alike, e.g. “You are my sunshine”.
- Hyperbole: An exaggeration to emphasize a point, e.g. “I love you a million”.
- Personification: The atrubution human characteristics to non-living object, e.g. “My
heart screamed in sadness”.
Activity 6
After studying the learning materials above, now read the lyrics “I Will Survive” once
again and answer the following questions:
1. What is the purpose of the song?
2. Which part is the Chorus of the song?
3. Can you find figurative language in the song?
