For the first hour mother and daughter sat in the living room and the daughter sat with her arms folded giving her mother "the hairy eyeball." (i.e., to stare at someone disapprovingly).
The mother tried to make small talk but was smart enough to suggest they go into the kitchen and try to find something they could make for lunch. The child rolled her eyeballs, huffed, followed her mother into the kitchen and the two fixed a meal and ate. Gradually, conversation started to happen.
The daughter asked if her and her mother could rent a movie. After the three hours were up they asked if they could stay a bit longer and make pizza.
At midnight they were both hysterically crying and embracing. Two weeks later with the blessing of the father, the daughter moved to live with her mother to catch up on lost time.
I learned the following from this case and I have learned other things from the hundreds of cases I have looked at or intervened in following it:
