In later years she added a garden railway to her passions. The “TH&B” Railway appeared
in the Kirk Crescent backyard. She provided gardening and building expertise, while Bob
contented himself with running the trains. Note: TH&B stood for “The Helen and Bob
Railway”.
Helen became a big fan of the Saskatoon Blades hockey team. She knew all the players
and the referees (especially when the latter missed calls!). Bob and Helen were
presented with their own personalized Blades sweaters by the nurses and staff from RUH
and the U of S in 2015. Helen has a large box full of her bowling trophies. Bob proudly
shows his curling trophy (n = 1!) . Bob wouldn't bowl against her as her average scores
were higher than his personal best. Photos show her teammates. She always had a
passion for light classical music and had season’s tickets to the Saskatoon Symphony
from 1973 to 2020. She also took advantage of living in various areas by attending a
number of Boston Pops, Hamilton, San Francisco and Marin County Symphony
performances.
She also read profusely with murder mystery novels her main genre. She maintained a
list on an excel spreadsheet with over 4,000 read in past few years. She was especially
excited to get Ian Rankin’s autograph at a book signing at McNally Robinson several
years ago. Ian was impressed with Helen having read every last one of his novels and
they had a short chat about several of them. The TV that she liked to watch were British
shows on PBS or on DVDs from the Library.
