In the picture on the previous page, the needle is centered. If the needle had
been one dot to the right, it would mean that the course line to the station was
2 degrees to the right. Each dot is 2 degrees, so the entire scale shows +/- 10
degrees.
9.9.3.3 Heading, radial inbound, radial outbound
As can be seen here, there is no
direct relationship between radial
and heading.
The aircraft here follows radial
315 (outbound) and regardless of
the aircraft's heading, the radial
does not change.
On the VOR instrument in the cockpit it will look like this.
Below you can see the relationship between
the concepts heading, radial inbound, radial
outbound.
If you fly directly on the radial towards the
VOR station, the inbound radial will be your
heading plus or minus 180⁰, depending on
o
o
whether you are north or south of 90 /270 .
If you fly directly on the radial from the VOR station, the outbound radial will be
the same as your heading.
