Principles of flight
5.6 Controls and maneuvering in three axes
An aircraft is controlled using pedals (one right and one left) and a control stick.
Both pedals and control stick are used to move the controls, which are located
on the outer surfaces of the aircraft, and which, when moved, change the
direction and/or speed of the aircraft.
The control surfaces acts just like a wing and generates a force at the place
where they are mounted.
5.6.1 Axes and control surfaces
An aircraft has 3 axes and 3 control surfaces:
- elevator - for movement around the lateral axis and provides pitch
- aileron - for movement around the longitudinal axis and provides roll
- rudder - for movement around the vertical axis (normal axis) and provides
yaw
The 3 axes intersect at the center of gravity.
