The following phrases together with their meanings are listed again in the
following table and illustrations.
PHRASE MEANING
SQUAWK (code) Set the mode A as instructed.
CONFIRM SQUAWK Confirm code A code set on the transponder.
SQUAWK IDENT. Operate the “IDENT” feature.
SQUAWK MAYDAY Select emergency code.
SQUAWK STANDBY Select the standby feature.
SQUAWK CHARLIE Select pressure altitude transmission feature
CHECK ALTIMETER SETTING Check pressure setting and confirm present
AND CONFIRM LEVEL level.
STOP SQUAWK CHARLIE Deselect pressure altitude transmission
WRONG INDICATION feature because of faulty operation
*VERIFY LEVEL Check and confirm your level.
CHECK ID SQUAWK For a mode S equipped aircraft, check the
setting of the aircraft identification feature.
*Used to verify the accuracy of the Mode C derived level information displayed
to the controller.
The pilot reply to SSR instructions is usually an acknowledgement or readback.
