Some folks like to use Post-It notes and line their smaller goals out on a wall leading up to the completion of
their Big Goal. Some use spreadsheets or planning software to map out their goals over time. Whatever tools
you use, I would recommend using something that you would visually look at on a regular basis (every week
at the least).
The idea is to break down goals (or even steps) that you will need to take to climb your Big Goal mountain.
Most people never achieve their Big Goals because they never break things down into achievable steps. The
human mind cannot process getting to a mountain top it has never been to before by only focusing on the
top. You need to start by looking a few feet ahead and taking the first steps.
Accountability
Having an accountability partner can also make a huge difference in whether or not you achieve your Big
Goal. Most of us are wired so that when we tell someone else that we are going to do something, we typically
do it. There are definitely exceptions on both ends, but this is how it works for most of us.
I would highly recommend contacting or creating a relationship with one or more of the following to help
you set up accountability with your goals (someone you are going to report to every time you have a due date
with a goal):
- A good friend or family member. Someone that will support and champion you along the way. Do
not choose someone that tends to be negative or points out your faults. But someone who will be honest with
you if you never follow-through on your promises
- A mentor in the music industry. Research people you admire. Find out who they have worked with.
Reach out to people in the industry and see if they are open to a mentoring relationship. You might be sur-
prised who says “yes.”
- Join an online group and start up an accountability “pod.” Ask people to start being accountable to
each other on their goals
- Find songwriting groups in your area and do the same as above (Meetup.com is a great place for this)
- Hire a life coach
Enjoy the journey of setting your goals and creating accountability check points along the way. Be honest
with yourself as well. If you need to adjust your goals or timing, do so.
