Rams Upset Top-Seeded Wilton, Denying
Warriors a Shot at its First League Title

NORWALK — In 1976, the Wilton High field hockey team won the first of its five state championships; an
overall total that includes the last three consecutive Class M crowns as the jewels of the program.
The Warriors, however, remain without an FCIAC championship for yet another year. The fourth-seeded
New Canaan Rams scored on their first shot of the game, coming just 71 seconds into Tuesday night’s semifinal
showdown at Casagrande Field, and then withstood a barrage of 16 second- half corners by the top-
seeded Warriors to post a 1- 0 victory. The win puts the Rams ( 12- 4- 2 overall) into Thursday’s league
championship game against Darien, who beat Staples 3-0 in the other semifinal. Wilton (14-3-1) suffered its
second semifinal loss in the last three seasons. Last year, Wilton fell to Darien in a 1-0 thriller. “I pretty much
just gave them the same (postgame) speech as last year, except its two totally different scenarios, “said Wilton
head coach Deirdre Hynes. “We played an amazing game last year.” This year the only thing that was
“amazing” on Tuesday was New Canaan’s staunch defense, which limited the Warriors to just three shots over
