ALL VERY FOREIGN. Financed by Lucy Schell, the Écurie Bleue was very much a French operation
despite entering two Maserati 8CTFs at the 1940 Indianapolis 500. The Chinetti-managed team
was treated well by their hosts, but the great gulf in racing rules, practices, technical setup, and
Indianapolis general culture shock doomed the transatlantic effort. René Dreyfus did not qualify
his car and instead would relieve René Le Bègue in this example at about half distance. After
more penalties due to missed translations, they finished 10th.
