MISADVENTURE. NART had plans to acquire a new 330 P for the next race, the 1966 Sebring
12 Hours, but it did not arrive. The 365 had sat in the corner, untouched since Daytona, yet
Andretti and Rodríguez were stuck using it. The race was a disaster, and the car caught
fire in the pits. It was extinguished, but with less than two hours to go, when Andretti
shifted from fourth to third at the Webster turn, the gearshift selector plate broke,
jamming him into first gear instead. The rear wheels locked up and put the 365 into a
spin and off the course. The Porsche of Don Wester, trailing Andretti, couldn’t avoid the
situation and went off the course, through flimsy fences, and killed four spectators who
were in a prohibited area. COURTESY OF REVS INSTITUTE, MAX LEGRAND PHOTOGRAPH COLLECTION

YOUNG MARIO. The first four times that Mario Andretti
appeared in a World Championship sports-car race
was with NART Ferraris. It was only later that he was
drafted into the Ford GT program. His very first co-
driver was Pedro Rodríguez, with whom he is chatting
