DOUBLEHEADER. The format of the big mid-July race meeting at Watkins Glen had a
unique but very welcome format from 1969 through 1974. Saturday was given over
to the 6-hour endurance race and Sunday was for the 200-mile Can-Am sprint. There
were drivers who were already engaged with teams in both series, but there were
also those who had the opportunity to dabble in the other discipline. It was more of a
one-way street for the cars. The endurance series had limitations on displacement and
components which precluded some of the exotic Group 7 machinery of the Can-Am.
Conversely, being surrounded by unlimited racing machinery meant that the smaller-
displacement and rules-restricted Group 5 and 6 cars were likely uncompetitive, but

would add some flair and diversity. Sam Posey made the crossover with the No. 14 NART
Ferrari 512 M (1020). Its sixth-place finish would be the best result for any of the six cars
that ran both races. It is worth noting that the Ferrari factory was renewing efforts to
compete in the series. The No. 50 was a 712 (1010), the largest-displacement Group 7 car
they would produce. Mario Andretti took it to fourth that day.
