HONORED COLLECTOR STEVEN HARRIS
The Honored Collector for the 39th Historic Festival is Steven Harris. An architect based in New York City and Professor of Architecture at Yale University, his work has been widely published and won numerous awards. His firm has been included in the Architectural Digest AD100, the Elle Décor A List, Interior Design’s Hall of fame, and the Luxe Magazine Gold List. He has driven in the Peking to Paris, Great South American Challenge, Colorado Grand, California Mille, SCM1000, Ramshorn and Copperstate 1000 rallies. He and his husband, Lucien Rees Roberts, divide their time between New York, California, and an island off the Dalmatian Coast.
Steven’s obsession with Porsches began with an uncle’s 1958 356, and his father’s 1967 911S, the latter of which he drove to university. “Because of the cars my father and my uncle owned,” he says, “I’ll be collecting two types of cars for the rest of my life: Porsche 356 and Porsche 911. I still remember what they smelled like, what they sounded like. That’s what started the whole thing.”
He went on to collect them for their performance, responsiveness, and relative comfort. Early on he decided to concentrate on Porsche’s purpose-built, high- performance models, which also meant that they would be relatively rare. His complete run of 911 RS models is probably the best in the world. The cars exhibited at Lime Rock represent a small share of a much larger collection that also includes six rare 356 Carreras. Several examples from the collection were displayed prior to the Festival at the Saratoga Automotive Museum in an exhibition aptly entitled “Rare Air.”
The magnificent studio photographs of Steven’s collection in this section were captured by photographer James Lipman.
