1969 CHEVROLET GM
ASTRO III Probably the wildest of
GM’s concept cars, this was the third car in
the Astro series. Powered by a gas turbine
engine, a 317bhp Allison, the Astro III
was a striking car that could be mistaken
for a three-wheeler but had its front two

wheels close together. With the powerpack
located at the rear, the drive was to the
rear wheels, which were enclosed within
twin pods. The cockpit access was through
a front-hinged canopy—another dramatic

1970 FERRARI 512 S
MODULO In response to the stunning
concept cars coming out of Bertone,
Pininfarina showcased the Modulo,
an extremely low car that remains
the wedgiest Ferrari ever. Penned by
Pininfarina designer Paolo Martin, the
Modulo was based on the Ferrari 512 S.
Ingress and egress was from the top with
the canopy-like top section sliding forward.

1970 VW-PORSCHE
TAPIRO Although the VW-Porsche
association is long, with Porsche now
being a part of the Volkswagen Group,
it was only for a short period between
1969 and 1974 that a model with the VW-
Porsche branding was sold. The 914/4
and its more powerful sibling, the 914/6,
were competent cars, but aesthetically
challenged. Italdesign and Giugiaro
saw an opportunity and proposed the
Tapiro. Based on the 914/6, the car was
a gullwinged wedge that predated the
