JENNIFER BUGERA Favourite Memory
JUNE 1991 There are so many memories when you have worked close to 35yrs
Start Date:
One story that sticks out in my mind…….a little history first:
Shortly after starting with the Department of Family and Community
Medicine I completed a Basic Foot Care Course. This would enable
the clients to have this extra service in our clinic I was working in.
One particular day a new patient brought into my office by his
community worker for foot care,. At the time he lived in a boarding
house and did not have the best hygiene practices even his clothes
were very worn. He was pleasant and quiet which I respected given
his mental health issues.
After the treatment was completed he looked at his feet and had
the widest ear to ear smile I had ever seen. He stated ” WOW can’t
believe these are my feet they look great” I was so taken a back the
quiet man that came into my office for this treatment of basic foot
care had opened up to me and began conversing. After the session I
gave him need a pair of socks. He was so over joyed he had a tear
in his eye.
After that first encounter we had regular foot care sessions and I
learned so much from this individual and his life. He was very chatty
in his foot care sessions afterwards compared to our first
encounter being able to trust and open his world to me.
This is why I work with the population in the downtown core
everyone deserves the dignity they require on a day to day basis……
