ROBYN ALEXANDER Favourite Memory
Start Date: January 5, 2005
I have endless fond memories that flood to mind over my
years at St. Joe’s, but the highlight has been a recent
collaboration with local professional artist Loretta Faveri
during the Covid-19 pandemic. Together, with the support of
St. Joe’s and the Ontario Arts Council, we rolled out a patient
program to support and treat people who struggle with
substance use disorder and shame.
Our therapeutic approach to healing shame and addressing
recovery was offered through an experiential and
psychoeducational group model. Group members were
taught specific art techniques, participated in various
mindfulness meditations and engaged in relevant group
discussions on topics such as forgiveness, self-compassion,
radical acceptance, etc.
This forgiveness project allowed participants a very unique
opportunity to explore their pain, their pasts, and their
deepest selves in the most self-compassionate way. 8 weeks
of making art together culminated in every member being
part of a collective masterpiece and something that brought
both pride and great joy to all involved.
Experiencing and watching this level or growth, courage and
recovery will remain a cherished and vivid memory of mine
for the rest of my life.
