GIVE YOURSELF CREDIT
When we’re experiencing burnout, we have trouble seeing positives. It’s hard for us to see anything good about our circumstances and about ourselves. Our focus is on all that is not going well and all that we perceive we are doing wrong, and we lose sight of the things we are accomplishing, both small and large.
To survive the stresses of your practice, this pattern needs to be reversed. The best way to do this is to set aside time to focus on your accomplishments. Doing so helps shift the focus from what you need to get done (i.e. ever-increasing work) to what you’ve already achieved.
Hand in hand with focusing on accomplishments is acknowledging your strengths. As physicians, our trade is diagnosing and finding problems with the human body, and if we aren’t mindful and intentional, this thought process quickly translates to finding problems with ourselves. We are often our own harshest critics.
Be present: after work each day, write down three things that you accomplished or did well. At the end of the week, review this entire list. Let yourself appreciate all you are doing.
