Preliminary Treatment
Preliminary Treatment is initial wastewater treatment which occurs at, or near
the Headworks.
The design intention of Preliminary Treatment is to remove large debris, rags,
grit and sand from the wastewater so that none of these materials impede
downstream processes.
Specifically, rags will entangle pumps, instrumentation probes and clog pipes.
Grit and sand act like liquid sandpaper wearing down all metal surfaces it
contacts. Grit and sand will settle in downstream tanks reducing valuable tank
capacity. Settled grit and sand will in time contribute to hydraulic short
circuiting.
Hydraulic short circuiting will significantly reduce the intended purpose of each
affected unit process.
