P. 5

Foreword

VetBooks.ir ur understanding of pain in small animals has increased exponentially over the past

years or so. or wild animals, showing signs of pain or in ury will often result in
being killed by predators or dominant members of their own species – a good reason
for evolving to hide signs of pain very e ectively. e now have a much better
understanding of behavioural changes associated with pain in animals and are better
e uipped to anticipate and treat pain in an e ective manner. or instance, techni ues
have been developed to reduce surgical pain such as in my own eld of minimally
invasive surgery; however, this does not eliminate the need for e ective pain control
both in the surgical patient and those with disease. his book provides a
comprehensive and detailed overview of pain management in small animals and will
provide an extremely useful and concise resource for the busy practitioner on a
                 day to day basis.

his guide includes extensive coverage of types and causes of pain and how to
prevent or minimise, as well as treat, pain in a variety of situations and species. here
is a liberal use of bullet points, tables and photographs, together with case studies
and examples that make this a really useful manual for getting information uickly in
                 a practice setting.
his new guide provides a wealth of information and practical advice that will bene t
both the general practitioner and the veterinary nurse, and more importantly, their
patients. It is a really valuable addition to the BSAVA range of titles.
