growth and regulation of cells, cell death, and inflammation. Group
VetBooks.ir III cytokines are involved in inflammation. The activities of the
group IV cytokines depend on their subcomponents. For example,
IL-12 is formed by a combination of a group I structure with a stem
cell receptor, but it acts like a group I cytokine.
A more practical cytokine classification is based on their roles in
adaptive immunity. Put simply, type I cytokines mediate cell-
mediated or type 1 immune responses, while type II cytokines
mainly mediate antibody or type 2 responses. The major type I
cytokines are IL-1 and IFN-γ. The major type II cytokines are IL-4
and IL-13.
