Causes
Bruising can be caused by:
• the horse treading on a stone or other sharp object
• working on hard, rough ground
• wedging of a stone between the shoe and the sole
• pressure on the sole from shoes that are too small or incorrectly fitted
• shoes that have been left on for too long and press on the sole.
A number of factors predispose a horse to bruising. These include:
• thin or soft soles
• flat soles
• long-toe, low-heel conformation
• over-trimming of the hoof wall
• foot imbalance.
