circulating inflammatory monocyte numbers are low as is their
VetBooks.ir tissue infiltration. At nighttime, when the animal is active, the
number of circulating monocytes and their tissue infiltration
increase. Similar rhythms have been observed in neutrophil
homing to bone marrow and in the expression of TLR9 by B cells
and splenic macrophages. One practical consequence of this is that
an animal's response to a vaccine may also depend on the time of
day when it receives the vaccine.

Receptors
Macrophages express thousands of different receptors on their
surface (Fig. 6.9). All are glycoproteins. Some are PRRs, such as the
toll-like receptors (TLRs) and the mannose-binding receptor
(CD206). CD206 can bind carbohydrate chains terminating in
mannose, fucose, or glucose on bacteria, and permits macrophages
to ingest nonopsonized bacteria.
