Macrophages undergoing prolonged stimulation may switch from an
M1 to an M2 phenotype. M2 cells secrete cytokine mixtures that not
only promote wound healing, but also promote the “walling-off” of
persistent irritants by fibroblasts and extracellular matrix. Other cell
types are attracted to the persistent antigen. Their precise
composition will vary with the antigens involved.
