                            invader the body destroys the invaders but, in addition, generates
                            memory cells. On second exposure to that invader, these memory
                           cells act to mediate a much stronger immune response that results
                                        in much faster destruction of the invader.


                  In subsequent chapters we will first review the mechanisms
               involved in innate immunity. Following that, we will review

               adaptive immunity and examine each of its basic components in
               turn. We will then examine the role of the immune system in
               protecting animals against microbial invasion. Finally, we will look

               at the diseases that result when the immune system functions either
               excessively or inadequately.
