associated lectins. DC-SIGN, for example, is a lectin expressed on
VetBooks.ir macrophages and dendritic cells (Chapter 10). Not only does DC-
SIGN recognize bacterial carbohydrates but it also recognizes
carbohydrates expressed on T cells. It is used by dendritic cells to
interact with T cells. The collectins are especially important in the
defense of young animals whose immature adaptive immune
system is not capable of mounting an efficient response.
