The vet will feel the lateral cartilages of the feet which should be pliable and spring back
into position after being squeezed against the pastern. The digital pulse of each limb and any
heat in the foot will be noted.
ASSESSMENT IN HAND
Unless the source of the pain is obvious, the horse is walked and trotted up on a hard, flat
surface wherever possible (Figure 4.5). If it is necessary to use the road, the horse should
always wear a bridle for maximum control.
